What should be entered in the “Minimum viewing time” field of the training module?

The Minimum viewing time field should represent the time required for the student to consume the module’s content with adequate attention and understanding, taking into account the type of media used.

This time is used as a passing criterion: the student can only complete the module after reaching the configured minimum time.

The time should be calculated based on the actual type of content presented to the student.

Best practices

  • Base the time on the student’s actual effort

  • For mixed content (e.g., video + text), add the times together

  • Avoid setting fixed times without considering the content

  • Review the times based on actual usage

  • Avoid setting times longer than necessary

Suggested times by content type

HTML (dynamic content)

HTML can contain different types of media (text, video, images, interactions, etc.).

Therefore, the time should be set based on the displayed content:

  • Text → use reading rule

  • Video → use video rule

  • Mixed → add the times together

PDF

Average corporate reading time:

  • 150 to 200 words per minute

    • Technical content: use 150 words per minute

    • Simple content: use 180 to 200 words per minute

💡

Example:

Text with 900 words → 900 ÷ 150 = 6 minutes

SCORM

The module is considered complete after confirmation that all content has been fully viewed.

Additionally, if the SCORM contains internal quizzes, the student must also pass these quizzes for the module to be considered complete.

URL

The URL may contain different types of media (text, video, images, interactions, etc.).

Therefore, the time should be defined based on the content displayed:

  • Text → use reading rule

  • Video → use video rule

  • Mixed → add the times together

Image

The time varies depending on complexity:

  • Simple: 30 to 60 seconds

  • Complex infographics: 1 to 2 minutes

Consider:

  • visual density

  • quantity of information

Video

Due to the possibility of fast-forwarding (up to 2x), the recommended minimum time is:

  • 50% of the video’s total duration

💡

Example:

10-minute video → minimum time of 5 minutes
